G321 - Day 2 - (Costumes and Props)

Day 2 was spent filming with the actor Sam Pridige who is playing both Chris and Richard. We filmed in both a bedroom and the kitchen.

Chris and Richard are wearing the same outfit for the date as they switch places. The final costume we decided on was for them to wear smart trousers, a tie and a suit jacket because they would be dressing smart for the date. It is how they interacted with the costume that showed their characters. E.g. Chris simply puts on the jacket and leaves whereas Richard dresses then spends much more time checking on his appearance. But we will be editing the footage to fool the audience into thinking there is only one, then the final shot shows them both.

Richard-

We dressed Richard's room with details that related/linked to his character's personality.

Some of the details were

Lots of different fragrances demonstrating he is vain and takes time with not only his appearance but also his smell.

 
There were also weights placed on top of the chest of draws. This tells the audience that Richard exercises (not to stay fit and healthy) but to attract women and look how he thinks he should.

Richard also owns a hip flask and there are a pack of cards placed in the space. Showing that Richard likes to drink and that he gambles or possibly has a gambling problem.

On Richard's mirror we placed a photograph of an attractive/sexy actress that was taken from a magazine. This implies that Richard objectifies women. He is not interested in what their personality is like, he only cares about looks and is very shallow.

Chris-
On Chris' bedside table we see several books that he has clearly worked his way through/is currently reading. They are a variety of different genres showing that Chris is intelligent and interesting.

He also has guitars and records hanging on the walls of his room. Implying that Chris is also talented and has many different interests and passions. (Chris is shown as the more preferable option between the two brothers as he seems interesting whereas we only see Richard interested in himself and there are hints towards him having a gambling and drinking habit).

In the kitchen scene a few alcohol bottles were placed on the side which Richard stands on and we also put a laphroaig glass in the background (laphroaig is a brand of scotch) further emphasising that he likes to drink.

G321 - Day 1 - (Costumes and Props)

For the first day of shooting we filmed all of the shots needed for the opening montage of Tallulah getting ready for her date. We showed a variety of shots of our actress (Cat) choosing between outfits, putting on make-up and trying on clothes.

We had several choices between costume as the person providing the location also had several outfits that were suitable for the character.

We dressed the set by placing make-up on the dressing table, flowers and other pretty and girly items/trinkets that Tallulah may have received and kept.

Tallulah had a mug of tea on her dressing table too with a famous slogan "Oh! What's Occurrin'?" said by a character from an English television programme (Gavin and Stacey). This gives links to a location for the film as this slogan would not commonly be known anywhere outside of the UK.

The bed clothes on Tallulah's bed have a pretty and girly theme, like the character herself.

When getting ready for her date Tallulah wore a floral silky dressing gown, which is feminine and elegant - like the character.

For her date we decided on a cream lace dress and cream heels with lace detail. The colours give connotations of innocence and also represent her femininity because of the delicate lace.

Tallulah's phone case was floral to match the rest of the decoration in her room and also reflecting her feminine personality.

G321 - Health and Safety

During the filming stage, there were a few rules and regulations that we had to take into consideration to ensure that all actors and crew members were safe. For example, we had to make sure that there were no hazards around like spillages or objects you could trip on. Also, as all of our actors were over 16 we didn’t need parental consent, this meant we could get filming as soon as possible. As a candle was included in our piece, we had to make sure that we had the correct equipment in case it went out of control .

G321 - Final Decisions - Props, Locations and Costumes

Props
Our final decisions on props were based on the characters personality and how the audience would interpret them. For example, the weights on Chris's table show that he cares a lot about his image and is quite shallow. Also Tallulah has a floral theme running through her props which has connotating she is girly and sweet.

Location

Our final decisions for our location were chosen due to how easy it would be to film in those places and which places would look best to set the scene. For example, we used our friends bedroom because it is very floral and girly which would be effective for Tallulah's character. For Chris and Richard we turned one males bedroom into two and placed different props in there to distinguish the difference in character. For the restaurant we used Katie's dining room and pushed a single table and two chairs up against a pretty wall to show they were in a restaurant. This worked just as well as going to an actual restaurant or using any other loaction because we could take as much time as we needed to film.

Costumes
Our final decisions on costumes were again based on the characters personality and what they were doing at the time. For example, at the beginning of the film opening Tallulah is getting ready to go on the date so she is wearing a pale green satin dressing gown which has connotations of innocence. She then puts on a pale pink lacey dress which again has connotations of innocence and purity. Chris and Richard are both wearing the same suit which explains to the audience out storyline. The suit is dark colours connoting danger and mystery.

G321 - Sound Consideration (logos)

After creating a logo for both our institution (Happy Lights Pictures) and our production company (Cheetah Productions) we must now make them  more interesting when included into our film opening. To do this we decided to include sound.

Happy Lights Pictures:
We wanted to keep the titles simple because we are an independent company and cannot afford anything too extravagant. We just decided to have the logo flash on screen (like a lightbulb) with a "ding" sound, so we began our search for the appropriate sound effect. Here are some of the options we found.

G321 - Sound Consideration

The majority of romantic comedy openings use a popular music track throughout. Because we are an independent company we cannot use a song that will cost a lot of money and also there will be copyright issues. Instead we spoke to a friend of ours who is in a band called In Blue Skies and asked for permission to use their song "3 Summers" from their most recent EP. We chose this song because it is a lighthearted tune that sets the mood for the rest of the film.

We also considered the idea of recording the sound of a restaurant (people talking at their tables etc.) and adding it to the footage to make the setting of the restaurant more believable and for the song 3 Summers to be turned down as if it was music being played in the restaurant. We did not use this idea in the end as we didn't want to break the flow of the opening by changing the sound part of the way through.
