G321 - Final Decisions - Props, Locations and Costumes

Props
Our final decisions on props were based on the characters personality and how the audience would interpret them. For example, the weights on Chris's table show that he cares a lot about his image and is quite shallow. Also Tallulah has a floral theme running through her props which has connotating she is girly and sweet.

Location
Our final decisions for our location were chosen due to how easy it would be to film in those places and which places would look best to set the scene. For example, we used our friends bedroom because it is very floral and girly which would be effective for Tallulah's character. For Chris and Richard we turned one males bedroom into two and placed different props in there to distinguish the difference in character. For the restaurant we used Katie's dining room and pushed a single table and two chairs up against a pretty wall to show they were in a restaurant. This worked just as well as going to an actual restaurant or using any other loaction because we could take as much time as we needed to film.

Costumes
Our final decisions on costumes were again based on the characters personality and what they were doing at the time. For example, at the beginning of the film opening Tallulah is getting ready to go on the date so she is wearing a pale green satin dressing gown which has connotations of innocence. She then puts on a pale pink lacey dress which again has connotations of innocence and purity. Chris and Richard are both wearing the same suit which explains to the audience out storyline. The suit is dark colours connoting danger and mystery.

G321 - Sound Consideration (logos)

After creating a logo for both our institution (Happy Lights Pictures) and our production company (Cheetah Productions) we must now make them  more interesting when included into our film opening. To do this we decided to include sound.

Happy Lights Pictures:
We wanted to keep the titles simple because we are an independent company and cannot afford anything too extravagant. We just decided to have the logo flash on screen (like a lightbulb) with a "ding" sound, so we began our search for the appropriate sound effect. Here are some of the options we found.

Option One                                                                               Option Two

Option Three                                                                        Option Four

We chose option number four because it was the closest to what we had in mind.

G321 - Sound Consideration

The majority of romantic comedy openings use a popular music track throughout. Because we are an independent company we cannot use a song that will cost a lot of money and also there will be copyright issues. Instead we spoke to a friend of ours who is in a band called In Blue Skies and asked for permission to use their song "3 Summers" from their most recent EP. We chose this song because it is a lighthearted tune that sets the mood for the rest of the film.

We also considered the idea of recording the sound of a restaurant (people talking at their tables etc.) and adding it to the footage to make the setting of the restaurant more believable and for the song 3 Summers to be turned down as if it was music being played in the restaurant. We did not use this idea in the end as we didn't want to break the flow of the opening by changing the sound part of the way through.

G321 - Organising Props and Costumes

Props -
We will be supplying items such as make-up, Hair products and equipment and any other items that the characters will be using to prepare for their dates. Many of the props will be supplied by ourselves creating the video but some items will be given by the actors involved as they may have something more appropriate for the scene.

Costumes -
We will be getting the actors to try on a variety of costumes for their characters to choose between our options and decide which will be more appropriate/fitting for the character. Again some of the clothing will be supplied by ourselves and some will be supplied by the actors. This is because they will already have clothing that fits them, it is just a case of deciding from the options available.

G321 - Audition times and Audition Script

Audition script- Tallulah and Chris/ Richard
Chris:
You look beautiful.
Tallulah:
You already said, but thanks again *nervous giggle*
Chris:
Ah sorry, this is my first date in a while *nervous laughter*
Tallulah:
Yeah me too haha, I don’t really like all the fancy stuff, I’m more of an adventurous person.
Chris:
No way! Me too! I think all this is overrated, I’d rather be climbing a mountain or cliff diving… *pause* with a beautiful girl like you.
Tallulah:
It’s not often you meet someone like that! Most guys only care about how they look or how many girls they can impress with fast cars and expensive jewellery.
Chris:
Yeah, I know someone like that.
Tallulah:
Well tell him he’s an arsehole from me *giggle*
Chris:
Believe me, I will.

For our film opening we decided that we didn't want any speech because it wouldn't work with how we've set out the scene but we still made an audition script to see how comfortable the characters look delivering lines they may have to deliver later on in the film.

G321 - Casting/audition intentions - our plans

We plan to audition several people for each character so that we have a wide variety of choice. First we must write a script for the auditionees to perform within their audition. We will ask them if they are okay with being filmed for their audition so we can watch them back to make our decision.

Once we have auditioned our options we will watch the footage/look at the photographs to decide whether or not the actors look suitable for the role. For example we will need a girly girl and a relatable and versatile male for the target audience.

We will also need to prepare a timetable for our auditionees to organise when each person needs to arrive and how long their audition will last. We will also prepare another timetable for our chosen actors so they know when they are needed for shoots and to ensure they are available.

G321 - Photographic Storyboard

To Introduce our characters to the audience we wanted to use a variety of shots to tell them some information about the characters. For example we see that Chris is reading a book about Schrodinger's cat. The close up on him books he is reading shows us that he is intelligent and interesting.

The majority of shots show Tallulah show how she is a girl character, focusing on her appearance for her date and wearing pink and floral clothing (e.g. the tilt shot on the far left shows her choosing what to wear, looking at a cream floral outfit). We use the same tilt shot showing Chris, he is dressed smart for their date.
The shot on the far left is of a hip flask, further demonstrating elements of the male character. (The audience do not know that there are twin males yet. The shots will lead them to believe it is only one character).

The middle image of Tallulah shows her looking at a different outfit. This will show time passing as she continues choosing between outfits. This shot will pan from behind the wardrobe door to reveal Tallulah standing there. Close-up of the jewellery further emphasises the elements we want to demonstrate of her character. Also by using the same style of shot when showing both Tallulah and the male characters the audience can make comparisons between them.

The shot on the far left will be edited to have two of the same man, in the same outfit standing opposite one another. This is the first time the audience will see that there are two male characters and that they are twins.

Showing Tallulah sitting on her own at the table on her own tells the audience that the male (whichever she's dating) has not arrived yet. Having the glass in the foreground will also give this shot a sense of location and the audience will know that we have arrived at the restaurant. The opening will end on a 2-shot, leaving the audience to question which twin brother she is with after they have been introduced to the characteristics of them earlier.
